RatSWD Working Paper Receives Great Attention

Joseph Henrich, Steven J. Heine and Ara Norenzayan's essay "The Weirdest People in the World?," which was prepublished as RatSWD Working Paper No. 139, has received great attention. It has been reported in the journal "Science" and in another journal "NATURE" the authors summarized their rather long article.

Preparations for the Census in Full Swing

The Chairman of the Census Commission, Prof. Dr. Gert Wagner, was recently hosted at Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI, Bundesministerium des Innern) to inform Minister Thomas de Maizière on the work of the Census Commission and the necessary methodological preparations from a scientific perspective.

Council Appointment

Two members of the German Data Forum (RatSWD) were appointed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to the Scientific Advisory Board of the BMBF Framework Programme for the Promotion of Empirical Educational Research. The appointees are Prof. Dr. Petra Stanat, Director of the German Institute for Educational Progress (IQB) at the Humboldt University in Berlin, and Prof. Dr. Gert G. Wagner, Chair of the German Data Forum. Additionally, Prof. Dr. Heike Solga of the Social Science Research Center Berlin and the Free University of Berlin, who is also a former chair of the German Data Forum, was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board.

The German Data Forum congratulates Petra Stanat for accepting a position as director of the IQB, a role which she has fulfilled since March 2010.

New Working Group "Regional Price Comparisons"

The Working Group "Regional Price Comparisons," which was appointed by the German Data Forum (RatSWD), has begun its assigned task. The goal of the Working Group is to discuss the varying possibilities for data collection as well as to formulate recommendations on how to establish a regional price level index. The Working Group is currently jointly chaired by Joachim Möller (Director of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) from the Federal Research Institute of the Federal Employment Agency (BA)) and Uwe Blien (also from the IAB) and its constituent meeting took place in Berlin on the 28th of April.

Workshop on Preparing a National Death Index

May 5, 2010, Conference Center of the German Federal Press, Berlin

The Working Group "National Death Index", which was installed by the German Council for Social and Economic Data (RatSWD) and is headed by Dr. med. Sabine Luttmann and Prof. Dr. Dr. med. Ulrich Mueller, will hold a workshop on the preparation of a German national mortality register on the 5th of May, 2010. Experts from numerous disciplines will present and discuss the current challenges facing research and the reporting of mortality data in Germany. Additionally, the workshop will serve as a platform for the exchange of experiences in dealing with mortality registers abroad as well as at the local level.

As of March, 2010, the Research Data Center PsychData (FDZ-Psychdata) of the Leibniz-Institute for Psychology Information (ZPID) is a certified member of the RatSWD research infrastructure. The Research Data Center Psychdata runs a platform for the archiving, documenting, and exchange of psychological data.

The use of business and organisational data in secondary analysis: a pilot project on the construction of a data service centre at the University of Bielefeld.

As of the 1st of January 2010, a pilot project has been running at the University of Bielefeld. This project concerns preparatory measures for establishing a data service centre for business and organisational data.

Authorship of Large Empirical Projects

For quite some time, there has been intense debate within the natural sciences about authorship guidelines for publications. The new year’s editorial of the journal "Science" discusses the central aspects of this debate. In light of the increasing complexity of empirical inquiries and analyses, this topic will surely also soon reach the social, economic and behavioural sciences.

Working Group "Information Infrastructure" on behalf of the GWK

The Joint Science Conference (GWK) requested that the Leibniz Association create a working group for "Information Infrastructure." This working group met for the first time in December 2009 in Berlin under the chairmanship of Sabine Brünger-Weilandt of FIZ Karlsruhe. At this meeting, a steering committee was appointed, of which the chairperson of the Council for Social and Economic Data (RatSWD), Gert G. Wagner, is also a member.

The German Research Foundation (DFG) calls for proposals on "informational structures for research data"

The German Research Foundation (DFG) invites project proposals in the area of "informational structures for research data" to be handed in by the 10th of April, 2010. The call for proposals is intended to support projects concerning systems for the provision of scientific literature and information (LIS). In particular, projects will be supported that fit into one of the following two categories:

  1. Discipline-specific organisational forms: proposals that aim to develop and, if possible, expand, discipline-specific organisational forms that protect, save and make use of research data,
  2. Research data repositories: proposals that aim to professionalize and expand already existing efficient research data repositories or scientific informational structures specialized in research data.
